The key to a successful shave, according to Dom Williams, head barber at AONO London, is preparation. Instead of a razor, shaving foam, some little squares of toilet paper for the nicks, and a dash of aftershave, it turns out there’s a rather a ritual for a successful shave. And what if, despite all this preparation and research, you’re still unlucky enough to get scratchy, red-raw skin after a shave? Well, we have some top tips to soothe your skin, calm your pores, and sort you out entirely.

First things first: wash and exfoliate your skin to lift the hairs and clean your pores. This will help you get a closer shave. We advise using the Purefectly Clean Face Wash, which contains peppermint extract and charcoal to cleanse deep.

Always make sure your skin has had a good five minutes under warm water so your pores are fully open and your bristles softened. This will help prevent skin irritation in the first place. The best time to shave is after a hot shower, when all the steam has worked its magic.

Use a small amount of pre-shave oil and massage it into your chin, jaw and neck. Wait thirty seconds while it lubricates the skin. This will provide a smooth base and prevent your razor from nicking your skin. Our Softer Touch Beard Oil is great for increasing glide while shaving.

There are three options for the next step. For a precision shave, use the Sharp Cut Shaving Stick with spirulina and quinoa. You can apply directly to the areas that need tidying up and the stick will raise the hairs and reduce razor burn. Another option is the Smooth Cut Shaving Foam - an unctuous and cushiony foam to keep you comfortable. Finally, there’s the Neat Cut Shaving Cream which offers the most moisture out of the three. Whichever you prefer, make sure your razor blade is as a sharp and clean as possible.

Using your razor, shave one inch at a time, rinsing off the excess under warm water.

Rinse your face with cold water to close the pores. Consider applying some toner to replenish the skin – the Spruce Up Toning Lotion is a good option to hydrate.

Once you’ve shaved, pat your skin dry with a clean towel and apply a liberal amount of Greater Look Face Moisturiser. This helps soothe fragile post-shave skin and reduce redness. Let it sink in for a couple of minutes, and admire the closest shave you’ve had in a long time.

Take a break. If you can help it, shave every three days to give your skin time to heal.

Chuck your old razor. Sure, lots of people keep shaving with a blunt blade out of habit. But a dull uneven blade can cause ingrown hairs and cuts, and it will certainly compromise the closeness of your shave. Chuck it.

Go slow. Make slow deliberate movements rather than going over the same patch of skin more than once. This will prevent razor burn and reduce redness.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. It’s not all in the shave itself. A good moisturiser for men will help to relieve irritation, fortify the skin and hydrate tired faces. And while all House 99 products are suitable for sensitive skin, if you’re particularly prone you can always do an allergy test on your forearm first.

So there it is. Just a handful of products and some patience will ensure you never have to endure another uncomfortable shave.
